Pick, wash and boil toordal till tender. Add salt and turmeric.

Roast, cool and powder all ingredients for goda masala. Chop tomatoes and coriander. Slit green chillies. Grate coconuts. Boil tamarind and prepare pulp. Cut jaggery into small pieces.

Add goda masala, tomatoes, green chillies, tamarind pulp and jaggery to the dal. Adjust salt.

Method

Heat oil. Add mustard seeds, curry leaves and asafetida and pour this tempering over the dal. Boil for 5-10 minutes more.

Serve hot garnished with coriander and coconut.
